Early Life
On August 27th, 1969, César Felipe Millán Favela was born into a rural family in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico. Since his youth, he developed a special connection with animals, especially dogs.
As a result, his fellow villagers dubbed him “el Perrero,” or “the dog boy.” At 21 years of age, Millán left his home country, migrating illegally into the United States, and eventually settling in California.
Dog Training Career
Millan kickstarted his pet industry career when he took a job in a US-based dog grooming shop. During this time, he was a limousine driver and was fortunate enough to meet the renowned actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
His expertise garnered at the grooming shop, combined with the actress’s aid, enabled him to open the Pacific Point Canine Academy. As one of his earliest patrons, she even provided him with a teacher to learn English.
Subsequently, in Los Angeles, Millan set up the Dog Psychology Center with a specialization in large-breed dogs. Nine years later, he shifted the Center to Santa Clarita. Also, he has inaugurated a facility at the Country Inn Pet Resort in Davie, Florida close to Fort Lauderdale.
TV Career
In 2002, Millan’s profile in the Los Angeles Times garnered the attention of MPH Entertainment, Inc. who began developing a pilot with him for a reality TV series to document his work on dog rehabilitation. The show, entitled “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan”, premiered on the National Geographic Channel in 2004, and soon moved to Nat Geo WILD.
The show quickly gained momentum and ended up becoming National Geographic’s top show during its first season. Its success sustained the series for nine seasons, concluding in 2012. The show’s influence spread around the world and it was broadcast in 80 countries, leading to two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Reality Program and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Animal Show in 2012.
Other shows and specials, which feature Millan, have been aired on Nat Geo WILD including “Cesar Millan’s Leader of the Pack”, “Cesar 911” (known outside the U.S. as “Cesar to the Rescue”), and “Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation”.

Personal Life
Millan and his ex-spouse, Ilusión Wilson, were married from 1994 until their divorce in 2010. During that time, they had two sons. A few months after the divorce and the death of Millan’s beloved pet Daddy, he attempted suicide in May 2010, which resulted in financial difficulty.
However, in August 2010, Millan found new love with actress and former stylist Jahira Dar and the couple announced their engagement in April 2016. Millan became an American citizen in 2000, and with his ex-wife, Ilusión founded the Cesar Millan Foundation (formerly the Millan Foundation).
The foundation supports animal shelters and other organizations dedicated to animal rescue, provides funding for spay/neuter programs, and collaborated with Yale University to design an educational program inspired by Millan’s teachings.
