Kathy was born on February 6, 1957 in San Diego, California. She was born to Fred Najimi and Samia Masri. Her father was known as a postal worker. While her mother was originally from Lebanon and immigrated to the US in 1946. She was 14 when her father died.
Najimy attended Crawford High School. After that, she attended San Diego State University and graduated in 1995. She was interested in acting and comedy from the beginning.
