On January 26th, 1970, Kirk Franklin was born in Fort Worth, Texas and was raised by his great aunt, Gertrude, after his mother abandoned him as an infant. To afford Kirk piano lessons, Gertrude gathered and sold aluminum cans.
Thanks to her effort, Kirk started taking piano lessons at the age of four. His debut album sold more than a million copies and he has won numerous Grammy Awards. Since 2000, Kirk has been a solo artist.
From a young age, Kirk displayed immense talent in music, demonstrating aptitude in reading and writing. His skill was quickly recognized when he became the music director of Mt. Rose Baptist Church’s adult choir at the age of twelve.
This feat was followed by the establishment of “The Family”, a seventeen-voice choir comprised of close friends and acquaintances, in 1992.
After one of their demo tapes was heard by Vicki Mack-Lataillade, the co-founder of record label GospoCentric, the group was promptly signed to a recording contract.
In 1996, Franklin and his team presented “Whatcha Lookin’ 4” to the world, receiving double-platinum certification and a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
He is celebrated for having a number of prestigious accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, as well as helming urban gospel choirs such as The Family, God’s Property, and One Nation Crew (1NC).
