Ted Danson, born on December 29th, 1947 in San Diego, California, was raised in Flagstaff, Arizona with his elder sister Jan. Their father worked as an archaeologist and the director of the Museum of Northern Arizona between 1959 and 1975. As a young student, Danson excelled in basketball at Kent School, a prep school in Connecticut.
Afterward, he chose to pursue his education at Stanford University and then shifted to Carnegie Mellon University, obtaining his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama in 1972. It was at this time that Danson’s love for acting developed.
In 1975, Danson was given his first paying job as an actor in television for the daytime soap opera “Somerset”, playing the part of Tom Conway, a contract role that he had until 1976. The following year, 1977, saw him being cast in the role of Dr. Mitchell Pierson on “The Doctors”.
Around the same time, he appeared in numerous commercials, becoming best known as the “Aramis Man” for Estee Lauder’s fragrance Aramis. As the late 70s and early 80s unfolded, he continued to make guest appearances on many different TV shows, including “Laverne and Shirley”, “B.J. and the Bear”, “Family”, “Benson”, “Taxi”, “Magnum P.I.”, “The Amazing Spider-Man”, and “Tucker’s Witch”.
In 1982, Danson gained immense popularity with his role as the former baseball player Sam Malone in the NBC sitcom “Cheers”. Despite its low viewership during the initial season, it steadily increased in numbers and by 1986 had become one of the most watched TV shows.
After 11 seasons and a grand finale watched by 80 million viewers, it ended on May 30, 1993. This finale made it the second most viewed in history. His role on “Cheers” earned him 11 Emmy and 9 Golden Globe nominations, with two wins for each.
Post-Cheers, Danson explored drama, venturing out from his comedic repertoire, and received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for his part in “Something About America”.
Additionally, he had brief roles in the CBS show “Ink” and the miniseries “Gulliver’s Travels”. After this, Danson starred in the CBS sitcom “Becker”, produced by the same production company as “Cheers”. It achieved a high level of popularity and was aired for six seasons from 1998 to 2004.
Starting in 2007, Ted Danson starred as the morally-questionable billionaire Arthur Frobisher in the FX Network drama “Damages”, which aired for three seasons (albeit with a reduced role in season 2).
He has since appeared in a number of popular shows, such as the HBO sitcom “Bored to Death”; the police drama “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”; “CSI: Cyber”; “Fargo”; and the NBC sitcom “The Good Place” with Kristen Bell.
In addition to his prolific TV career, Danson has also been seen in several feature films. Notable titles include “The Onion Field” (1979) where he played Officer Ian Campbell; “Body Heat” (1981); “Creepshow” (1982); “Little Treasure” (1985); “Just Between Friends” (1986); ”
A Fine Mess” (1986); “Cousins” (1989) with Isabella Rossellini; and “Three Men and a Baby” (1987) and its sequel “Three Men and a Little Lady” (1990) with Tom Selleck and Steven Guttenburg.
Ted Danson Salary
During his last three seasons on “Cheers”, Ted Danson earned a whopping $450,000 per episode. This amounted to a staggering $12 million per season in the nineties. If you account for inflation, this is the equivalent of a staggering $25 million per season today.
During his tenure on CBS’s “CSI” from 2011 to 2015, Danson earned $250,000 for each episode and appeared in 86 installments, meaning he was pocketing approximately $21 million per year. However, at the apex of his run on “Cheers”, Danson was raking in a colossal $500,000 for every episode.
Danson has gone down the aisle three times. He first wed actress Randall “Randy” Gosch, who is now professionally known as Randy Danson, between 1970 and 1975. His second marriage was to producer Cassandra “Casey” Coates, with whom he is blessed with two daughters. Currently, his third wife is acclaimed actress Mary Steenburgen.
The dissolution of Danson’s marriage to his second wife, Casey Coates, stands as one of the costliest celebrity divorces in history. This costly conclusion to their relationship was, in part, caused by Danson’s involvement with Whoopi Goldberg.
The end result for Danson was a hefty settlement of two million dollars for every year of their marriage – amounting to a staggering $30 million in today’s dollars. That would be equivalent to about $50 million after inflation.
Ted and Mary Steenburgen have been married since 1995. They own numerous properties throughout the United States, mostly in the LA area. In 2019, the couple sold a nine-acre property in Ojai for $8.75 million. In 2005, the trust that they used to purchase the house was $4.5 million.
Two years later, in 2017, they bought a different house in Ojai for $2.4 million. In 2014, they spent $3.5 million on a home in Santa Monica. Just a year later, they added another property to their compound with a $5.2 million purchase next door. They also own a cottage in Nashville and a six-acre complex on Martha’s Vineyard.
